Virgil Santiago "Junior"

Kumu Junior is a native Pacific islander born in Kahului, Maui, and raised in Kalihi Valley on the island of Oahu. In 1996, he began his studies with the late Kumu Lomi Dane Kaohelani Silva, a Kahuna Pule in the line of Lono, Pu‘uhonua ‘O Honaunau, Hale O Keawe.

In 2005, he was given the title Kumu Lomilomi, which is recognized by the Hawaiian Lomilomi Association. In November 2022, following the passing of his Kumu, he was honored with the title of Poʻokela.

In March of 2024,
Virgil was initiated into the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Puna, Moku o Keawe, at the invitation of Ali'i Sir Desmon Haumea K.G.C.K. Virgil's membership in the Royal Order continues Kumu Daneʻs legacy of benevolent service to the community and the culture of Hawaiʻi.

Virgil was inspired to learn the healing arts from his great-grandmother from the island of Maui and his grandmother from Oahu. He was taught at an early age that the principles of the ancient ways provided a foundation for understanding the physical, mental, and spiritual self and how the true self can reach the depths of one’s soul.

Virgil believes, as his elders did long ago, that the spirit of the individual must be healed, only then can the healing process begin. Lokahi (Balance and Unity) of the mind, body, and spirit is a must for overall well-being.

Virgil’s philosophy, "Malama Pono E - Preserve Your Balance," encapsulates his commitment to holistic health and cultural preservation. Through speaking engagements, teaching, healing work, and community service, he shares how to build a strong foundation of self care and ohana care in order to live and work with others in ways that are pono.
